If you love to bet it all on a hot hand to beat the house, but don't enjoy gambling away your own money, Super Blackjack is the game for you. This fun computerized version of the classic casino game pits you against the house with a $5000 bank account at your disposal. There is no storyline or ultimate goal to the game, so you are able to burn through the money if you want or conserve it for future use. While not the best game out there, Super Blackjack is a fairly well put together blackjack game.

Start At High or Low Stakes Tables

To play, you must first begin an account with your name, which gives your $5000 to gamble away. You can choose to play in either the Blackjack Bar-room or the Blackjack Vegas room. The Bar-room requires a $1 minimum bet, with a maximum bet of $200. The Vegas room requires a minimum bet of $100, with a maximum bet of $1000.

The Vegas room can be played with either 1, 2 or 6 decks of cards, whereas the Bar-room can only be played with 1. This doesn't really affect gameplay, however, because all it does is change the odds of what cards you might get, or make it more difficult for you to count cards. In blackjack you are dealt two cards initially. You must then decide whether to stick with those cards (stand) or be dealt another card (hit), in order to get as close as possible to a total of 21 without going over. In order to win the hand, you must be closer to 21 than the dealer. If not, you'll lose the money you bet at the beginning of the hand.

Controls are Easy to Learn and Use

The player controls how much they bet by choosing a poker chip that corresponds to the amount they wish to bet, then can click the Deal button to be dealt their cards. The buttons for Hit, Stand, Options and Instructions are all large and very easy to interact with, with very clear instructions on how to play and what all the terms mean. The entire game window is quite well done, with very sharp graphics, bright colors, and “marquee” lights on the side that glow when you win a hand.

No Music and Little Sound

Unfortunately, as well done as the graphics are, Super Blackjack is also missing some important elements. There is no music, only accompanying sound effects, which themselves are sadly lacking. For example, there is only a little swish when the cards are being dealt, without the dealer even saying something cheesy like “here's your card.” A little music or some more effort with the sound effects would have gone a long way towards making the game feel more cohesive and entertaining.

Not Much Variety

While blackjack is a fun game to play, it can also get quite repetitive, especially since there is no multiplayer option. You play against the dealer, with no other players (even AI ones). This means very little variety in gameplay. This is also reinforced with the similarity between the two modes of play. Bar-room and Vegas are virtually identical, with the exception of their different minimum bids.

If you are just learning how to play or you don't want to burn through your bank account too quickly, you can play Bar-room and only bet $1. If you are more of a high roller you can play Vegas and bet $100, but other than that the two modes are exactly the same.

Conclusion - Basic BlackJack, That's It

Super Blackjack is a decent card game for those who don't mind a lack of music and variety. It teaches the game of blackjack very well in very simple terms, and allows you to experiment with betting fake money. Without music the game feels very disjointed, and without a multiplayer option or more differences between the two modes, the game ends up feeling quite repetitive and eventually boring. However, if you are looking to get started in the wide world of blackjack games, this isn't a bad place to start.
