54321 Great game., Dec 29, 2009

by Jan L. Callaway (Bremerton, WA USA)

I love this game. Great features like the spy. Couldn’t have done it better myself. Also, I like the way the terrain changes with global warming. Keeps you on your toes all the time, not with just the enemy but your own backyard as well.
Great job.

43211 Excellent game but could use some upgrades, Sep 11, 2009

by Pokefan68 (Birmingham, AL USA)

Freeciv is an excellent game but could use some other stuff. It’s fun to play and easy to learn but it’s long and difficult to win. I liked that the game is a free downloadable version of civilization and it gives more civilizations and game options. What I don’t like is that you can’t name your own civilization which can be done in civ 1 and 2. This game is fun but it takes a LONG time to finish but if you like turn-based strategy games then this is worth the download. If you aren’t then just give it a try and uninstall it if you don’t like it. This game is excellent for kids to learn about some history and to have fun at the same time. It’s good for adults who can’t find civ 1 and want to play some version of it. This game isn’t as good as civ 2 test of time in graphics but its easier to learn and play than it. That’s all I have to say so download and see if you like it or not.

32121 fine game, Aug 27, 2009

The game is not bad at all, it is a fine game for being a free one.
More or less like the initial version of age of empires.

32121 My opinion of this game., Aug 01, 2009

by Julian (Cordoba, Argentina)

OK, here i will write what i thought, before and after playing and the pros and cons.
Note: This is/was being written as I download-play this game so don’t find it weird.

Before downloading:
Entered developers website, I think the download should be places over the source, since well, people will mostly download the compiled version.
I started downloading it and found the 13MB size very convenient since my slow internet doesn’t help.
I started installation and it installed very fast. I ran the game and I will now tell you what i think from looking at the game screen.
OK, now that i saw the game screen It looks like a empty main menu, It is just missing something. I come from a game creation website(down-loadable software) and i rate a lot of games monthly so i know what I am talking about. I also think that the main menu should have a link to the developers web site so if someone downloaded it second hand they can see updates done and can download the most recent version.

Now I am going to play so starting now i will write what i think of this game after play.
Instead of writing a long summary i will just write the pros and cons list so you do not get bored.

Pros:
Good graphics
You can change a lot of options

Cons:
I don’t know if its single or multi player.
No idea where to go.
When clicking on a character to move it a window pops up and it sometimes freezes.
No idea what the objective is.

I tried playing the tutorial but it doesn’t work for some reason.
If i understood the game it would be a good game so i will give this a rating of 3.

I hope people find this ‘‘useful’’ and basically read it since people will think its too long.

54321 FreeCiv Is The BEst, May 25, 2009

A very good game. Takes a while to play a full game but once you start playing and get the hang of it you just can’t stop playing.

43211 Everything a computer strategy game should be. . ., May 01, 2008

by Roy Gathercoal (Beautiful Pacific Northwest)

... although the implementation of the game could use some polish.

Freeciv is much, much better than others *because* it is open-source. Those willing to do the work have left their various marks on the game.

The result? You customize it to play solo or up to 30 humans. You pick nations, geographies, government systems, economics, and more: You get a great game and a high frustration potential.

Create your own land wars or a waterworld where ownership of the smallest piece of barren island makes the difference. Start with Babylonian vs. Phoenicians, play with stealth bombers and SETI programs, or both. At the same time!

This game offers the ultimate replayability potential. a simple change of the right two variables will produce an entirely new game.

In-game help is spotty so the online fora are critical. Documentation is awful.

Within the genre, Freeciv is more complex and customizable than most. You set a big stage, then play out representative units in their own roles.

I started playing Free Civ with a lot of skepticism. I am a veteran of strategy games and have spent endless hours over civilization games. Free civ kept me addicted to the game all through. It is definitely worth the time to give it a try. One of best strategy games available in the free download domain.

32121 FreeCiv fun, but lacking., Nov 06, 2007

by Jason Bunderson (Highland, UT, USA)

FreeCiv was a really enjoyable game.  It had many of the same features as Sid Meier’s Civilization, and is, as the name suggests, free.  However, I did find certain qualities lacking in this game that were present in the costly version (understandable, since it is, after all, a free civ).  First, I must complain about the graphics.  They are very hard and distract a person’s eye very easily.  Second, I find that the overall feeling of the game is just not the same.  It lacks a certain ‘oomph’ that Sid Meier’s games had.  Finally, I found the game to be slightly difficult to navigate, and the city and terrain graphics/info were very crowded.  If an update was released, I would make the coastlines smoother, and try not to confine everything to squares.  Other than those three things, I did not find much wanting on the game.  I believe that this is the best civ game that you can get for free, and I would heartily recommend it to any who love and adore, as I do, Sid Meiers Civilization
