Risk Review

Risk transports the classic board game to your computer and does a very good job of staying true to the original while adding in some very nice features.

Faster Combat and Setup Time

In case you haven't seen or played the game before, Risk is a turn-based game of world domination where you place your armies on countries across the globe and battle for control of territories and continents until there is only one man standing. This computer port improves upon this classic action by getting rid of many of the hassles and time consuming aspects of the game. There are no long setup times anymore or worrying about managing all the small pieces and cards, and the addition of gameplay options like having the dice auto roll or having “quick battles”, where combat is automatically resolved but you lose the option to retreat, all add up to greatly reduce the time it takes to finish a game.

Also, there are plenty of hours of gameplay to experience with several different computer controlled generals, each with different strategies and difficulty levels, and the option to bring along some friends and play in a “hot seat” style game.

Not As Many Game Modes

There are a few downsides to this game though. For instance, the graphics and sound effects may get the job done but are a bit bland and don't really do much to draw you in. Also, the lack of other game modes or options detract a bit from the replay value. The announcer's voice can get a bit annoying as well, especially considering he repeats many of the same lines again and again no matter how long you have been playing.

Conclusion - Good Basic Risk Game

Overall, Risk is a great port of the classic board game and stays true to the fun and addicting action. It greatly reduces the time it takes to actually play through a full game of world domination by getting rid of the many hassles and provides a few game options to even quicken the pace further.

There are a few slight issues, but the faster gameplay is very addictive and is sure to overshadow these problems. If you are looking for a quick and fun way to enjoy the strategic action of Risk, then this title is perfect for you and is great for any fan of the board game genre.
