Cubis Gold Review

Not Your Typical Match 3

Cubis Gold is a unique and entertaining match 3 game in which you've got to match a variety of colored blocks in groups on three or more both vertically and horizontally. There are 200 different levels to take on with plenty of obstacles and powerups along the way. You can even create and play your own levels. You can choose the look for the level backgrounds that you like the most.

Several different modes change up the gameplay and add different challenges for you to conquer. Simple controls and play make this a game suitable for players of all skill levels.

Game Play Overview

In Cubis Gold, you have a grid with colored blocks scattered across it. Your goal is to match a certain number of blocks by creating groups of 3 or more of the same color. You can fire blocks in a straight line onto the grid to create the groups and earn matches. Not only can blocks match horizontally on the grid like in other match 3 games, but they can also stack on top of each other and match vertically as well. There are wedge blocks that will slide underneath other blocks, and powerups which change block colors or create stacked blocks. You'll need to think a bit differently for this game, and face challenges unlike those in any other match 3 game.

In addition, you've got a limited time to get all the matches you need, so you'll need to be quick. If you don't complete the level before time runs out the game will end and you'll have to start over. It might sound a bit complicated, but the basic gameplay is fairly simple and there is a tutorial to guide you through it all.

Tons of Levels To Play Or Make Your Own

There are a huge number of levels to tackle in the game, each with a unique layout of blocks and obstacles to tackle. Obstacles come in the form of gray blocks that cannot be moved or match. The only way to clear these obstacles is with the powerups that let you destroy either a single block or group of blocks. On top of the numerous levels, there is also the option to create your own levels in an easy to use game editor. You can make a set of incredibly challenging levels that you may struggle to beat, or levels that are quick and easy.

2 Modes Add Some Variety

Cubis Gold includes two modes of play to add some variety to the gameplay. Arcade mode has you matching a certain number of blocks on each level before time runs out. Puzzle mode has you needing to match only blocks that have star symbol on them before you run out of time. Once all those blocks are matched, the level ends and you advance to the next one.

Drawbacks

One downside to the game is the lack of difficulty settings or options to play without a time limit. Some of the levels are very challenging, and if you fail on one you'll have to start over from the beginning (which can be frustrating). Being able to play without time limits or on easier levels would have been a great addition to this game, especially for new or lesser skilled players. However, the game does include a large number of tutorial levels that do help teach different parts of the game.

Another issue is with the controls of the game. Moving the blocks that you want to fire feels slow and it's easy to move the mouse a small amount and mess up block placement. More responsive or accurate controls would have been a good improvement.

Graphics Are Good Enough

The graphics in Cubis Gold aren't exactly cutting-edge, but are comparable to other similar games and you can even customize the appearance of the levels to some degree. The music adds to the game as well, without being distracting or annoying. The one negative for the presentation is the angle of the camera as you play the game. The view you are given makes it difficult to see blocks at times as they can be hidden behind other blocks.

Conclusion - Recommended For Those Looking For Match 3 Variety

If you're looking for an entertaining and challenging match 3 game, give Cubis Gold a try. There are a few issues like the viewing angle, sluggish controls, and lack of difficulty options, but these are outweighed by the positive aspects of the game. There are 200 different levels to take on with plenty of obstacles and powerups along the way. You can even create and play your own levels. You can choose the look for the level backgrounds that you like the most.

Two different modes change up the gameplay and add different challenges for you to conquer. Simple controls and play makes this a game suitable for players of all skill levels.
