Chocolatier: Decadence by Design is a great simulation that places you in charge of both the production and sales of the world's finest Baumeister Confection Chocolate. This game will have you traveling the world in search of the best ingredients, the finest recipes, and the most lucrative business opportunities. You are the CEO and it is your job to take control, turning your down and out chocolate company into one sweet money making business.
WWI Era Chocolate Making
The overcast skies of Zürich, Germany is the setting for where most of this game takes place. As the story reveals through a WWI-esque movie reel introduction, you are taking over the Baumeister Confection Chocolate Company because of a tragic war related incident. It becomes your job to turn the war-depleted chocolate company around, once again making it a huge success by selling your chocolate to various global buyers.
Creative Recipes
This game has several elements that keep it interesting and interactive. Making chocolate and creating new recipes are fun examples of this interaction. To make chocolate you go to your factory and shoot ingredients into round chambers that produce chocolate bars. This mini game takes skill and increases in difficulty as your success and the number of consecutive bars increases. Each recipe in this game is different, but typically consists of two or three ingredients needing to be shot into the chambers.
Successful chocolate making will allow you to produce more chocolate per week, resulting in more profits. Another great way to increase your profits is through creating recipes. The Baumeister family has a secret testing facility in Iceland which is where your creations come to life. Building your own recipes can bring about higher profit margins and greater success. A simple combination of peanuts, cacao, and caramel might be worth several thousand per box, more than double the rate of the pre-created chocolates.
Simple But Catchy
As far as game mechanics and gameplay are concerned, this game is delightfully simple. You never see your character and your interactions with others are just through pictures and text blurbs. However, despite the simplicity the game flows very well and the controls are easy to use. Through clicking on different cities or people you can gain a plethora of knowledge, leading to greater success. Though the graphics are not the best, the simple style of play compliments the simple graphics nicely. If they were more detailed or in depth the game would feel as if it were missing something, which is not the case.
Smart Buying and Selling a Necessity
The only obvious drawback of this game is with the buying and selling of goods. The prices vary significantly between locations, however you never know what the prices will be until you try to buy supplies. This fluctuation can be annoying and is not obviously dependent on any factors outside of your success or random chance. If the prices were reflective of the economic state, the game would have a more realistic feel and would have more depth.
Conclusion - Sweet!
Overall, Chocolatier: Decadence by Design is great. It is a simple game that will keep you occupied for hours and hours. Making money is fun, and if you work hard with some strategy, you will make a lot of it. The game is for anyone looking for a sweet time, making mouthwatering chocolates.
