Bookworm Adventures Review

Join the lovable green bookworm Lex as he uses his word forming abilities to battle mythological beasts on a quest to save the legendary Cassandra. Through spelling and training, Lex improves his fighting abilities, giving him the strength to take down even the harshest of opponents. You are going to be challenged by Trojans of Ancient Greece, mutant sea creatures of the Mediterranean, and even Cyclops as you fight to save Cassandra and other legendary damsels in distress.

A Worm That Fights With Words

Bookworm Adventures Deluxe is an engaging take on spelling. In this game you control the character Lex. You spell words from 16 letters presented in a 4 x 4 grid of letter tiles. The words do not have to be adjacent to one another to use, but once a letter is incorporated in a word it cannot be recycled. Like other words games, long words formed are worth more and cause more damage to your foes. As you start taking down your opponents and beating each level's boss, your abilities increase and you advance to other mythological areas, fighting along the way. Your successes are not only rewarded with advancing to the next level. As you advance you also earn chances to play mini-games. These bonus levels can provide you with upgrades and bonus points depending on how well you do.

Adventure Aspect Will Appeal To Non-Traditional Word Gamers

The adventure aspect improves this game immensely and separates it from other games in the word genre. Unlike most games that just have you construct words for points, this game has you building words for fighting. This fighting element is so engaging you might even forget you are spelling. The focus is on taking down your enemies, which is thrilling. You are driven to improve your spelling and create longer words because the will to advance and beat each level's boss is so great.

Multiplayer Would Be Nice

Despite all the fun you experience fighting and building your vocabulary, this game still has areas that could be improved. It would be nice to see a multiplayer mode of any kind. This could be over the internet or through a Local Area Network (LAN). Having the ability to battle your friends or others throughout the world would be a great feature. You could have a character that you upgraded and then battled against others. This would be a fun multiplayer take on the game.

Another small flaw is with the difficulty settings. There is only one difficulty in this game. This could make the game too hard for a lot of younger spellers, and much too easy for spellers with more experience. Multiple difficulties and a multiplayer mode would make this game more accessible, thus better.

Conclusion - A Winning and Creative Blend of Game Types

Overall, Bookworm Adventures Deluxe does a lot of things right. This is a fun spelling game that has you battling the worst of mythological villains. Despite not having a multiplayer mode or multiple difficulties, this game's options are more than sufficient for having a great time. Take down Cyclops or the Trojan Polydamas in your quest to save Cassandra and the other Damsels of ancient times. This game is highly recommended for all ages, especially the younger crowd, learning how to type and spell.
