Upon awakening from the long slumber of your long-range space fleet's journey, you pore over the reports generated by your ship's sensors and discover a miraculous find, an Earth-like planet with easily accessible ore deposits, breathable atmosphere, abundant water, and a protective magnetic field. It is almost too good to be true.

It soon becomes clear that this gem will not be taken so easily as an ancient race has left a deadly legacy on the surface of this miraculous world. An intelligent machine has run amok and taken control of advanced replicator factories on the surface and created an army of humanoid robots that have driven out most of the planet's biological inhabitants. Your engineers managed to hack into several of these factories before the planet's AI realized what was happening and cut off all communications. Now, war is afoot and your people's very survival hangs in the balance.

A Unique Gaming Experience

While NERO looks like a Real-Time Strategy game at first glance, it is actually a different game entirely and is part of a new gaming genre called Machine Learning Games. Since the only way to harden your robotic army against enemy control is to make them autonomous, unresponsive to direct commands, and the only way to win is to make them smart enough to capture all the production facilities still under the AI's control and shut them down, you must train your robots how to fight before even sending them into the field.

This is the most innovative aspect of NERO and plays out as two phases to the gameplay. You first enter into a sandbox training mode where you must gradually train your robotic army in complex tactical behavior. Each robots brain is scored during each round based on how effective they were and you can influence their behavior through reward controls, for instance encouraging your forces to not approach the enemy too closely and assume defensive positions when firing from long range. Then, it is only a matter of letting your armies loose against other players and seeing who had a more effective training regimen.
