One of the Most Addictive Card Games has Just Gone Mobile
The humble game of solitaire has got to be the greatest and most widespread time-killer mankind has ever devised. The game’s rules make it easy enough to learn and the surprising amount of strategic depth ensure players will always come back for more. Unfortunately, it was not the most portable game around for the longest time. If you wanted to play a quick round, you either had to have a laptop or a deck of cards on hand. One requires time to boot up and a possible power supply if the battery life isn’t up to snuff, while the other needs a flat surface and even more time to set up.
Fortunately, those days are now officially over! A new digital edition of solitaire has just come to town. Thanks to MobilityWare’s aptly-titled Solitaire, the classic alternate-color-stacking, suit-grouping game can now finally be played straight from your smartphone. With fluid new controls and bountiful options of play, it may just be the definitive edition of digital solitaire yet!
A New and Convenient Way to Play
Thanks to its new digital format, MobilityWare improves classic solitaire in a surprising variety of ways. Solitaire may have been fun before, but you’ll be amazed at how much better it has become with this portable version.
- Features an easy-to-use drag-and-drop control method. Use your finger to move cards around, place them into stacks and tableaus, and so on.
- Do you have a call coming up? Don’t worry; Solitaire is set to automatically save your game in the event that you get an unexpected interruption. Take the call; your game will wait for you.
Enjoy the New Features to Solitaire
This package doesn’t just give you a mobile version of an old classic. It provides all sorts of options you can use to alter your game, as well as little changes to the formula that breathe new life into it.
- Connect to Game Center to submit your score to the online leader boards or challenge your friends to some competitive play.
- Play single and triple-draw solitaire.
- Select the “Winning Deals” option to ensure that every hand you’re dealt with can be won.
- Use the “Show Me How to Win” feature to see how your current game can be won. See if a game that has you stumped could really be won and learn a few new strategies in the process.
- Unlock special achievements and pull new tricks in solitaire that you would have otherwise never considered before.
Determine Your Look
If the old green backdrop and basic aesthetic that we often associate with computerized solitaire is just not doing it for you, then you’ll love this. MobilityWare includes a host of options that allow you to customize the appearance of your game in whatever way you see fit!
- Play solitaire in either Portrait or Landscape mode.
- Use images stored on your device to create your own custom card backings.
- Make your own background.
- Set your choice of background music from whatever you have saved onto your device.
Are You Ready to Deal?
Chances are you have very likely burned many hours of your free time on solitaire. With MobilityWare’s latest edition, you are guaranteed to lose even more, especially when you opt to take its wide array of new features and improvements into account. Even if you’re not a heavy card player, there’s no reason not to install it onto your system, especially since it’s completely free. Do yourself a favor and deal out some tableaus. No smartphone or iPod Touch is complete without Solitaire!
Solitaire (by MobilityWare) Review
Can Such a Timeless Classic Be Improved?
When it comes to games played to pass the time, solitaire is the quintessential favorite. Toting a deck of cards around is one way to get your solitaire fix, but Solitaire by MobilityWare offers a much more convenient solution by putting a game of solitaire in the palm of your hand. Does this app provide a true to life solitaire experience for busy players on the go? Read on to find out!
The Next Evolution of Solitaire
Solitaire on the computer is fun, but it's not very portable. Playing on the go with a deck of cards isn't exactly convenient either. This mobile game gives you the ability to play solitaire whenever and wherever you feel like, regardless of location. It's also easy to stop playing and pick up your round right where you left off.
Waiting in line somewhere? Make a few moves in your round of solitaire. Sitting in a waiting room trying to pass the time? Play some solitaire! With this game, it's easy to fit solitaire into your life.
Play Solitaire Your Way
This game offers tons of options for customizing your gameplay experience. You can choose between random dealing or winning dealing, or even opt for a combination of the two. Select normal, no score or Vegas cumulative scoring depending on your mood or playing preference, or turn on draw 3 dealing for a different twist on the game. There is even a right and left-handed mode, making the game comfortable for anyone, regardless of handedness.
The game displays a timer and the number of moves per round by default, but these may be turned off for players who would prefer to play without those distractions. The screen orientation can also be locked so the screen doesn't change direction or size based on input from the device's sensors.
Simply put, this game allows players to basically play however they want, and this amazing array of options is presented in a simple and logical manner that makes navigation easy. The only way to play a more customized game of solitaire is to pick up a deck of cards and play the old-fashioned way.
Accessible for Anyone, Regardless of Skill
If you're old hat at solitaire, it's easy to jump right in and play as soon as the app is launched. However, players who could use some help will find plenty of advice and support in this app. The Settings menu has a lengthy explanation of the rules which gives new players a firm grasp of the fundamental concepts of the game. From there, players can ask the game for hints throughout the round. The computer will calculate and demonstrate a series of useful moves that players could act on if they choose to do so, and this makes mastering solitaire a snap.
In addition, you can also ask the game to show you how to win. This will bring up replays of killer rounds of solitaire that you can watch and learn from to become the best solitaire player possible.
Customizable Table and Cards
By default, this game offers 25 different deck designs featuring traditional deck patterns, animals, nature landscapes and more. In addition, 11 different table textures are available, ranging from rich woods to plain and simple colors.
Solitaire also gives you the opportunity to upload your own card and table graphics directly from your device's photo library. For the card decks, the app even gives you the ability to crop and resize your chosen image until it fits perfectly on your cards.
The possibilities with these customization options are endless. Photos of friends, family, pets, scenery and more can become your new favorite card patterns or table backgrounds. This is a clever use of new technology, and it really adds to the fun of the game.
Not So Solitary Solitaire
Solitaire is a game traditionally played alone, hence the name. However, this game manages to make solitaire a social event through the ingenious use of achievements and multiplayer gameplay. The game has 27 different achievements for players to work for, and you can challenge your friends to beat your score on them as well.
Multiplayer lets you play with a friend on the same deal of solitaire. Voice chat is also available during the round, making it the most immersive multiplayer experience possible.
The online leaderboards also make solitaire a social affair by showcasing skillful players. Can you beat your friend's high score? What about the worldwide champions? If you think you have what it takes to surpass the best of the best, prove it!
If you're not feeling social, don't fret. You can disable the Game Center for a more traditional and solitary solitaire experience at any time.
Detailed Statistics Available for Review
The game keeps track of all the minute details and offers an elaborate log of stats for you to review, if you feel so inclined. This is great for analysis, and it gives players critical information that could improve their game. The statistics can also be cleared and reset at any point as well, making it a useful utility for players.
Difficult to Select and Drag Small Cards
The game is more than capable of automatically moving cards with a simple tap from the player, but the game also offers a manual option that limits input from the computer. The manual option puts players in full control of where the cards go without the computer guessing where they belong, but it's extremely difficult to move the cards around by hand. In the end, it's better to keep the automatic tap move enabled in order to play the game more smoothly, but it would have been nice to have the manual mode as a functional option for players who want full control over their gameplay. It's not a dealbreaker, but it is a con.
Solitaire by MobilityWare is a surprising title that presents the classic card game with lots of innovation and care, effectively updating solitaire for a new generation of players. This is the definitive solitaire app for iOS and Android, and it's worth a download for anyone with a compatible device. Overall, this game scores a 7.5. Solitaire has never been so good.
